    Kawanabe Kyosai and Katsu Kaishu ((1831-1889) (1823-1899))- Shoki Facing Forward with One Hand Outstretched
    1871—1889. Hanging scroll. Ink and light colour on paper. Signed: Seisei Kyosai; Kaishu. Sealed: Shunkai; Mononobe Yoshikuni. Katsu Kaishu was an important statesman and is particularly known for his role in the surrender of Edo Castle during the Meiji Restoration. His calligraphy on this combined work reads: Fuji jizai (As much wealth and honour as you wish).

    Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889)- Demon Chanting the Nenbutsu (Buddhist Prayer) 1871-1889
    Hanging scroll. Ink and colour on paper. 103.5 x 32 cm. Signed: Seisei Kyosai. Sealed: Kyosai in. The oni wears a Buddhist vestment and has a kane (gong) hung on his chest. He holds a hogacho (notebook with list of pledged contributions) in one hand with a shumoku (wooden bell hammer) in the other. It was believed that hanging this type of image in an infant’s room at night would prevent the baby from crying
